Smudge Tutorial Step 7 (Classic Scales)

So, the speckly look was okay, but I decided I wanted to do something more traditional. So, I smudged all those speckles back into the skin to get back to here using a 17 pixel soft edged brush at 50% pressure. Makes a nice painted feeling to the skin, and if I were doing a shorthaired or hided dragon, I might stop here...but I want to do scales. So, on we go!

Taking a smudge tool set to 3 pixels (hard edge or soft...doesn't matter) at 94% pressure, I "draw" scales, just like I would for a black and white picture. For details on "Scale Flow" see my scale tutorial.
